In the time since, I am proud to have published hundreds of other significant exclusives, but despite all that, I never thought that I would find this. CNN has a copy of their Challenger launch broadcast footage. It's available on CNN's own YouTube channel, and it understandably has millions of views. CNN's upload is a 360p video whose content is similar to what you see here — with three major differences: (1) this version is of substantially higher quality, (2) this version doesn't have any CNN branding, and (3) this version continues NASA's feed longer than CNN showed on air. This is a direct copy of NASA's broadcast feed. It was saved by NASA, and at some point a copy was transferred to the United States Geological Survey on a VHS tape. This video is a digitization of that tape; as far as I know, this is the first time it is being shown publicly.

Ukrainian tank crews have completed training on Challenger 2 tanks in the UK and have returned home to continue their fight against Russia’s illegal and unprovoked invasion. The training began shortly after the announcement in January that the UK would donate 14 Challenger 2 tanks and accompanying ammunition and spare parts to aid Ukraine. 🤍britisharmy trainers spent several weeks training Ukrainian personnel how to operate and fight with the tanks. Instruction included how to command, drive and work together as a Challenger 2 tank crew and effectively identify and engage targets. The Challenger 2 tank marks a step change in capability for the Armed Forces of Ukraine, ensuring they are better able to protect their crews and offering them some of the most modern and sophisticated gunnery systems in the world.

January 28th, 1986 at 11:39am EDT - The Space Shuttle Challenger Explodes on its 10th flight during mission STS-51-L. The explosion occurred 73 seconds after liftoff and was actually the result of rapid deceleration and not combustion of fuel. CNN was the only national news station to broadcast the mission live, so thus what you are witnessing on this video is the only coverage of the disaster as it happened when it did. Approximately 17% of Americans witnessed the launch live, while 85% of Americans heard of the news within 1 hour of the event. According to a study, only 2 other times in history up to that point had news of an event disseminated so fast - the first being the announcement of JFK's assassination in 1963, the second being news spread among students at Kent State regarding the news of FDR's death in 1945. It has been estimated at the time that nearly 48% of 9-13 year olds witnessed the event in their classrooms, as McAuliffe was in the spotlight. The 25th Space Shuttle mission altered the history of manned space exploration and represented the first loss of an American crew during a space mission (Apollo 1 was during a training exercise). Christa McAuliffe was slated to be the first teacher in space for the Teacher in Space Program. As her maximum altitude was ~65,000ft (12.31 miles), she never made it to space. That title was given to Barbara Morgan of STS-118 aboard the shuttle Endeavour in August 2007, 22 and a half years after the Challenger Disaster. Morgan served as McAuliffe's backup during STS-51-L. As Morgan is now part of the Educator in Space Program, she will be credited as the first "educator" in space, to distinguish her from McAuliffe. A news cameraman was despatched to film what SHOULD have been a routine puff piece - reaction shots of the interested parties in the bleachers, at the latest shuttle launch. What he ended up filming was EXTRAORDINARY... [more below] As the shuttle exploded, 74 seconds in, those who were familiar with launches knew their relatives and loved ones were DEAD - however, those attending their first launch initially assumed the explosion was merely separation of the vehicle's stages. Thus, as some faces became wreathed with PAIN - others were still in awe at the majesty of it all. But as word of what had ACTUALLY happened began to spread through the crowd like a slow cancer - those faces too became angst-ridden. Meanwhile, the cameraman carried on doing his JOB - scanning the crowd for reaction shots. When his work was aired on the evening news bulletins, it had been cut down to a few seconds of sterile clips - but this is his FULL UNCUT footage. It is followed by a piece, recorded shortly AFTER the disaster, where British media hack Alastair Stewart interviews a young woman named Heather Couper, who was the president of the British Astronomical Association. However, particularly on social media, there seem to be lots of confusion as to what equipment a Challenger 2 actually has and how well it would allow it to compete against other, sometimes more modern, counterparts like the US M1 Abrams or the German Leopard 2A6/A7(+). Before we look at its performance stats, what really is a Challenger 2 and why does it exist? Challenger 2 is a third-generation MBT, the same generation as the Russian T-80 & T-90, German Leopard 2, and US M1 Abrams. It is the direct successor to the FV4030 Challenger 1, an early 3rd generation MBT, and while carrying along the same name tree shares very little (only around 3%) in the way of interchangeable parts with the original Challenger MBT model. Designing of the Challenger 2 began by Vickers Defence Systems (now BAE) as a private venture in 1986, by 1989 a deal was finalized for a demonstration vehicle, an order was placed by the MoD by 1991. It was here that it earned its reputation for being an unstoppable behemoth. During urban operations, aka, the worst place for a tank to have to perform, one challenger II came under fire by RPG-7s. The first hit damaged the driver’s sights, as the commander ordered for the tank to back out of the area, it became stuck in a ditch after throwing track, meaning the tracked portion became unattached from the actual road wheels, effectively immobilizing it. While stuck, it would be hit by another fourteen RPGs, and a MILAN ATGM. The crew were able to hold their position in the tank completely uninjured, and it was later towed away for repairs, and most impressively, was back in operation just six hours later. Another Challenger II tank in the same battle would be struck by a reported 70 RPG rounds, and was still able to continue fighting, albeit the crew probably had a headache by the end of it. Ez volt az első amerikai űrkatasztrófa, amely repülés közben történt. Tanket e avancuara të betejës, të dhuruara nga aleatët perëndimorë, përfshirë Leopardët 2s nga gjermania dhe Challengers nga britania e madhe, kanë mbërritur tashmë në Ukrainë duke i dhënë kështu më shumë fuqi mbrojtësve të vendit pas muajsh pritje... Ministri ukrainas i mbrojtjes, Oleksii Reznikov, tha se Ukraina kishte marrë tanket e betejës Challenger nga Britania, mjetet e blinduara Stryker dhe Cougar nga SHBA si edhe blindat marder dhe tanket Leopard nga gjermania. Edhe kancelari Olaf Scholz konfirmoi se tanket gjermane kishin mbërritur tashmë në Ukrainë. Vec tyre, edhe tre leopardë 2 të dhuruar nga Portugalia janë tashmë në fushëbetejë. “Sot unë kam nderin të provoj personalisht risitë më të fundit të njësive tona të armatosura, në mënyrë të vecantë Challengerët britanikë”, tha ai. Reznikov postoi një video që e tregonte atë të ulur në një prej disa tankeve, në një fushë të hapur, të gjithë me flamujt e ukrainës, verdhë e blu. Në video, ai shpreh mirënjohjen dhe kënaqësinë për mbërritjen e tankeve të sofistikuar dhe falenderoi homologun e tij britanik, Ben Uollas... Tanket perëndimore të betejës kanë më shumë fuqi zjarri dhe rezistencë se cdo tank i rusisë. Eklspertët thonë se Challengerët e britanisë janë superiorë ndaj gjithckaje që ka rusia, përfshirë edhe tanket me të cilët Putin krenohet T-72. Një challenger, sipas tyre, mund të marrë katër apo pesë goditje direkte nga një T-72 dhe të mbijetojë, ndërsa një goditje e vetme e tij do të shkatërrojë një T-72. Tanket perëndimore do të lejojnë po ashtu ukrainën të kryejë edhe manovra të kombinuara nëse mbështeten nga këmbësoria dhe artileria dhe pjesa më e madhe e ukrainës jugore e lindore është terren ideal për kombinimet e tankeve moderne perëndimore dhe mjeteve të tjera të blinduara për të nisur kundërsulmin e paralajmëruar.
